Kejriwal apologises for quitting Delhi govt, seeks fresh elections

AAP's rethink on Delhi polls came days after a dismal show in the Lok Sabha elections where they secured four seats despite fielding over 400 candidates.

NEW DELHI: Aam Aadmi Party leader Arvind Kejriwal on Wednesday sought fresh elections in Delhi, while apologising to people for quitting the government abruptly.

Addressing the media, Kejriwal on Wednesday said, "People want us to form the government or else they won't forgive us."

He apologised for quitting the government 49 days after coming to power in the state.

In February, Kejriwal resigned as the Chief Minister over his failure to pass the Jan Lokpal bill in the assembly.

He said, "I apologise to people of Delhi for quitting government abruptly."

The AAP leader also ruled out holding referendum. "No question of holding a referendum. We will opt for fresh polls," he said.

AAP's rethink on Delhi elections came days after a dismal show in the just-concluded Lok Sabha elections where they secured only four seats despite fielding over 400 candidates.

Earlier, the AAP leader met senior party members at his residence to discuss the party's future course of action on forming a government in Delhi.

The meeting started 9 a.m.

The AAP on Tuesday had told Lt. Governor Najeeb Jung that it wants to form the government in Delhi, and asked him not to dissolve the legislative assembly for a week.

In a letter to the Lt. Governor, AAP said it will hold public meetings in Delhi to obtain people's opinion on forming the government. (With inputs from agencies)
