Uttarakhand receives snowfall

Dehradun: Higher reaches of Uttarakhand including the shrines of Badrinath, Kedarnath and Yamunotri received snowfall while the lower hills and plain areas continued to experience light to moderate rains bringing cold conditions in the state.

The higher reaches of Himalayas received snowfall following continuous rains for the past few days posing problems for pilgrims undertaking the 'Chardham' pilgrimage.

The bad weather conditions for the past few days have also affected the programmes of several VIPs visiting the state.

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and his family had to stay in the Kedarnath shrine area in Rudraprayag district since Tuesday due to inclement weather.

He was today brought to Fata area from where he would leave for Badrinath by road tomorrow, officials said.

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank could not attend a function at Gopeshwar in Chamoli yesterday as his helicopter could not take off due to bad weather.

Five helicopters carrying family members of a Chhatisgarh minister and pilgrims from Kolkata also had to make an emergency landing due to bad weather during the past two days.

The light to moderate rains in lower hills and plain areas of the state also dipped the temperature. The day's maximum temperature in Dehradun is hovering around 30-32 degree C which is below 4 to 5 degrees below normal.
